The four main types of stainless steel, austenitic stainless steel and ferritic stainless steel are widely used. The classification of the above categories is based on their crystalline microstructure. The austenite has a face-centered cubic crystal structure while the ferrite stainless steel has a body-centered cubic crystal structure. They differ in microstructure due to their chemical composition. Unlike austenitic stainless steel, ferrite alloys are magnetic.
