How to perform flattening test on seamless stainless steel pipes

1. Preparation

Equipment preparation:

Flattening test machine: Choose a suitable flattening test machine that has sufficient pressure and accuracy to meet the test requirements. The test machine should be equipped with a measuring device to measure the deformation during the flattening process.

Measuring tools: Prepare calipers, micrometers and other measuring tools to measure the size of the pipe.

Sample preparation: Cut a sample of appropriate length from the stainless steel seamless pipe to be tested, generally 50mm to 100mm. Both ends of the sample should be flat, without burrs and cracks. If necessary, both ends of the sample can be processed to ensure its flatness.

2. Experimental steps

Measure the sample size: Use a measuring tool to measure the outer diameter and wall thickness of the sample and record the measurement results.

Install the sample: Place the sample horizontally between the two pressing plates of the flattening tester so that the axis of the sample coincides with the center line of the pressing plate. Adjust the spacing between the pressing plates so that the sample is not under pressure in the initial state.

Conduct a flattening test: Start the flattening test machine and slowly apply pressure to gradually bring the pressure plate closer to the sample. Observe the deformation of the sample and record the pressure and deformation during the flattening process. Continue to apply pressure until the sample is flattened to the specified degree. For seamless stainless steel pipes, it is usually required to be flattened to one-third or one-quarter of the outer diameter.

Check the sample : Stop applying pressure and take out the flattened sample. Check whether there are defects such as cracks and fissures on the surface of the sample. If there are defects, it means that the quality of the sample does not meet the requirements.

Measure the size after flattening: Use a measuring tool to measure the height of the sample after flattening (i.e. the distance between the two pressing plates) and record the measurement results. Calculate the flattening rate of the sample based on the size changes before and after flattening.

3. Result determination

Eligibility Criteria:

If the sample has no defects such as cracks or fissures during the flattening process, and the flattening rate meets the requirements of the relevant standards, the sample is judged to have passed the flattening test. The pass standards for the flattening test of stainless steel seamless pipes of different materials and specifications may be different, and should be judged according to the corresponding standards.

Unqualified treatment: If the sample has cracks, gaps and other defects in the flattening test, or the flattening rate does not meet the standard requirements, the flattening test of the sample is judged to be unqualified. For unqualified samples, re-samples can be cut from the same batch of pipes for testing. If the re-test is still unqualified, it means that there are problems with the quality of the batch of pipes, and further inspection and treatment should be carried out.

When conducting the flattening test of seamless stainless steel pipes, the relevant standards and operating procedures should be strictly followed to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results. At the same time, the test personnel should pay attention to safety to avoid accidents during the test.
