Common examples of stress cracking corrosion

SCCS are most at risk in high-temperature, high-chloride or sulphide operations. So this means that industrial examples tend to be concrete. While broader examples such as offshore oil and oil extraction or processing show obvious risks due to the environment, more subtle situations also arise in unexpected places. For example, stainless steel is often used in food processing because of its sanitary and easy-to-clean properties. But piping or pressure vessel reactions -- and whether OR not SCC occurs -- will vary from product to product. Foods with low acidity like chocolate may be less risky than pickles, ketchup or other foods with high acidity. It is also an important problem in carbon steel structure engineering. Many of the structures are exposed to the outdoors and the large loads, often in terms of weight, size and support, mean that the entire design is subject to a number of risk factors.
