Corrosion resistance

304 stainless steel has excellent resistance to various atmospheric environments and various corrosive media. It is prone to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion in the warm chloride environment, and is prone to stress corrosion cracking above about 60 ° C. It is considered to be resistant to pitting corrosion in water up to about 400 mg/l chloride at ambient temperature and can be reduced to about 150 mg/l at 60 ° C.

304 stainless steel is also very sensitive to thiosulfate anions released by pyrite oxidation at room temperature (such as those encountered in acid mine drainage). Serious pitting corrosion may occur when it is in close contact with pyrite exposed to oxidation or clay materials rich in sulfide.

For more severe corrosion conditions, when 304 stainless steel is too sensitive to chloride pitting or crevice corrosion or general corrosion in acid applications, 316 stainless steel is usually used instead.
